$3 Million investment delivers welcoming gateway to Devonport
The Albanese Labor Government has delivered a $3 million investment to enhance East Devonport, strengthening its role as a vital gateway for visitors arriving in Tasmania aboard the Spirit of Tasmania.
The project has transformed key entry points from the Spirit of Tasmania dock, creating a more attractive, accessible and welcoming experience for the hundreds of thousands of visitors who arrive each year.
The project delivered extensive improvements along key routes, including:
- 250 metres of kerbing and channel upgrades
- New line marking along the route
- Reinstated nature strips
- Large-scale landscaping works across more than 3,000 square metres
- Planting of at least 28 semi-mature trees, 100 shrubs and 1,000 ground cover plants
- Renewal of at least 1,000 square metres of road pavement
- Construction of more than 400 metres of new footpath and cycle path
In addition, improved signage now better directs visitors from the East Devonport Wharf to the Devonport city centre and Visitor Centre. This includes:
- A new static tourist information sign
- Replacement of ten existing directional signs
- Installation of a stylised entrance marker
Anne Urquhart MP said the upgrades would leave a lasting impression on travellers and showcase the best of Devonport from the moment they disembark.
“This investment ensures that visitors arriving in Tasmania are greeted with a modern, vibrant and visually appealing gateway to our state”, Ms Urquhart said.
“Devonport is the front door for many tourists, and it’s crucial that their first impression reflects the beauty and character of our region.
“With around 600,000 people expected to arrive each year on the new Spirit of Tasmania vessels, this project positions Devonport to capture more visitor interest and encourage people to explore our region.
“By investing in quality infrastructure, public art and landscaping, we’re not only improving amenity for locals but also strengthening our appeal as a destination.”
