ANNE URQUHART
FEDERAL MEMBER FOR BRADDON
MEDIA RELEASE
$8 MILLION TO SUPPORT ROAD SAFETY IN BRADDON
The Albanese Labor Government is investing more than $8 million to deliver two road safety projects
across Braddon as part of the latest funding round of the Safer Local Roads Infrastructure Program
(SLRIP).
The SLRIP funds projects that create safer and more productive roads across Australia.
The investment includes $5 million to replace Savage River Bridge and Guthrie Creek Bridge on
Norfolk Road. The existing timber Savage River Bridge will be replaced with a new single-span
through steel girder bridge on bored pile-supported abutments, and Guthrie Creek Bridge will be
replaced with a single-cell precast box culvert crossing.
The second project is a $3.1 million realignment of an approximately 250-metre stretch of road on
Upper Natone Road, to bypass an active landslip area identified through geotechnical investigations.
Both these projects will increase safety for residents, truckies, tourists and all road users.
The successful projects are part of nearly $140 million in additional Commonwealth funding set to
deliver a total of 45 road safety projects across the country.
Projects will improve key transport routes, strengthen local infrastructure and provide safer journeys
for all road users.
The Albanese Labor Government has strengthened Commonwealth Road programs, including
doubling the Roads to Recovery Program to $1 billion per year, increasing the Black Spot Program
from $110 million to $150 million per year, as well as providing $200 million per year for the SLRIP.
Quotes attributable to Member for Braddon, Anne Urquhart MP:
“The replacement of both Savage River Bridge and Guthrie Creek Bridge on Norfolk Road will make
a real difference for people who rely on these roads every day. From locals heading to work, workers
travelling to Savage River Mine, and tourists exploring the beautiful West Coast.
“The road realignment project on Upper Natone Road is about keeping our community safe and
planning ahead. By working closely with Burnie City Council, we’re addressing potential safety
concerns now, before they become bigger problems, and ensuring locals can continue to travel these
roads with confidence.”
“Both these projects will deliver safer and more reliable roads improving access for local families,
truck drivers, businesses, tourists and everyone who relies on our regional road network. These are
practical investments that will strengthen connectivity and support our communities for years to
come.”
