Improving riverside habitat in North West Tasmania

The Albanese Government is investing $320,000 to protect riverside reserves throughout Waratah-Wynyard.

The commitment, made by the Albanese Labor Government during the 2025 election campaign, will improve the health of the environment in sensitive waterways and help protect critical species habitat across Frenchs Road Nature Reserve, Inglis River Riparian Reserve, Camp Creek Riparian Reserve and Ballad Avenue Reserve.

The project will be led by the Waratah-Wynyard Council, and works will include targeted weed control, revegetation, wildlife monitoring, community planting days, as well as infrastructure upgrades to improve safe public access.

Member for Braddon, Anne Urquhart said the funding would help to conserve and protect the area for future generations.

“These reserves have been historically degraded and impacted by humans, which has led to altered waterflows, silt buildup, and infestations of invasive weeds like blackberry and hawthorn.”

“This funding will support local restoration efforts, so that local wildlife and residents can enjoy the area for many years to come.”

Minister for the Environment and Water, Murray Watt said the area was home to a number of native species.

“These important riparian habitats are home to threatened species such as the Tasmanian devil, azure kingfisher, and eastern barred bandicoot.”

“I congratulate Anne and the Waratah-Wynyard Council for this great project, and look forward to seeing the transformation.”

The funding is part of the Australian Government’s Local Environmental Projects Program, which is protecting and improving our environment and heritage.
