Major Bridge Upgrade to Improve Safety and Freight Access in Sassafras

The replacement of the ageing single-lane timber bridge over the Rubicon River on Smith and Others Road in Sassafras is now complete, with a new dual-lane concrete bridge to significantly improve safety, connectivity, and freight efficiency in the region.

The upgraded bridge will provide a direct and reliable link between the Bass Highway and Frankford Highway, reducing travel times and supporting the movement of heavy vehicles involved in forestry, farming, and bushfire management operations.

The project also includes improvements to the road alignment and guard rail spacing, making access safer and easier for oversized vehicles and emergency services.

The new bridge will also enhance connectivity for eastern Sassafras residents to essential services, schools, and community facilities — including the clay pigeon shooting range and the Tasmanian Equine Endurance Riders Association.

Quotes attributable to the Federal Member for Braddon, Anne Urquhart MP:

“This upgrade is a vital investment in regional infrastructure.”

“It will support local industries, improve access for residents, and ensure emergency services can respond quickly and safely without lengthy detours.”

Quotes attributable to the Mayor of Latrobe Peter Freshney:

“Our Council and community are grateful for the support and advocacy provided by Braddon MHR Anne Urquhart and the Tasmanian Labor senate team in accessing Federal Government funding to supplement the replacement of this crucial community asset.”
